Who are we?
Skitchers Get Pitchers is a group of cyclists with adventurous palettes, driven by culinary curiosity in the pursuit of a better biked future for our local communities. Road warriors are as welcome to join us as anyone but we try to clock more smiles than miles so we rarely sport spandex.
What do we do?
We ride bicycles on predetermined routes with planned stops at eateries, breweries, parks, and beaches. We use marked bike lanes whenever possible, obey traffic laws at all times, go to places that people would traditionally drive to, and present a unified front of respect for everyone with whom we share a road, dining hall, or taproom.
Why do we do this?!
We want to get more people out of cars and into bike lanes for fun and practical purposes. Of all the bike commuters we've met over the years, an overwhelming majority work in the food and beverage industry. Therefore we show solidarity by incorporating local nom and glug stops into our rides as much as possible. After all, good food and tasty beverages put the wind in our sails physically and spiritually.
Our Sunday rides mostly take place in newly implemented bike lanes and we’re out to make a visible presence using them in order to increase awareness for drivers (who may be accustomed to having an extra lane where ours is now) and to show support for businesses that might have lost some storefront parking in order to accommodate our safe passage. In most of the areas that we pass through without the luxury of a bike lane, it’s already in the works, so we show those businesses some love in hopes that they’ll feel a little better about our lane when it comes to their storefronts.
Our Friday night rides are a living demonstration of the fact that going out for dinner and a drink with friends doesn't have to mean getting behind the wheel or opening a ride sharing app. These routes weave a web throughout LA, using the magic of the bicycle to band together an array of breweries serving disparate communities across our urban tapestry. We try to make as many friends as possible along the way in hopes that they will consider our approach to urban transportation in the future.
Our Saturday rides are all-day excursions that demonstrate the long reach of our pedal-powered conveyance when paired with railways. This concept is pretty commonplace in other parts of the world like Europe, but here in Southern California (and most of the USA), people in locations further from urban centers are often baffled to see a group of people arrive on bicycles at all, let alone from so far away... let alone without driving. We hope that shifts their perspective on human-powered transportation at least a little bit.
What don’t we do?
No form of harassment is ever tolerated at our events. This is a very creative group of uniquely capable people - do not make yourself the subject of a brainstorm about moral limitations.
Where are we?
Our rides boomerang out from the West Adams neighborhood. The Metro Expo Line stops just a few blocks away which makes it easy to reach for those who wish to join us from afar without adding miles to their pedaling or having to get behind the wheel after a pitcher.
